In November 1990 a group of people formed the 'A1 Steam Locomotive Trust', as a charitable organisation their objective was to build an A1 Class locomotive from scratch. The actual building of the locomotive started in 1994 based on the original Peppercorn design but incorporating some improvements. Completed in 2008, the locomotive was given the next sequential A1 number of 60163 and was named 'Tornado' in honour of the Royal Air Force aircraft. Through the early months of 2011 'Tornado' was undergoing an overhaul, prior to this it was painted in a traditional LNER livery but in February the team at the Trust commenced a full repaint.
On the 9th May 2011 'Tornado' was shunted by diesel out of the shed at the NRM carrying a BR Brunswick green livery with an early BR emblem. 'Tornado' carried this livery throughout its tours of 2011 and during a winter maintenance program it was changed to a late BR scheme as modelled here. 'Tornado' first publically appeared in this livery at the Mid Hants Railway in February 2012 and carried this livery until the autumn.
