Although largely inspired by the 3rd sub-series of the BB 66000 locomotives, with the same appearance and same motor, the BB 66400 are fundamentally different in the design of their operation. Built by the Alsthom factories in Belfort, these locomotives are able to operate in multiple units (UM) with locomotive of the same series, but not with the BB 66000 locomotives. The BB 66400 have a three-phase alternator, which can heat the trains without the use of the traditional heating van.
