Very similar to the American Space Shuttles on the outside but designed differently for instance in terms of a higher payload, the Soviet Union established the Buran project in the 1980s. In 1988, an unmanned Buran 1.01 flight orbited the earth before the space program was cancelled in the wake of the Soviet Union's collapse.
