A Grand Prix great makes his 500 cc debu
1989 marked the beginning of an exciting new era for Grand Prix motorcycle racing. That year, John Kocinski started to race in 500 cc competitions, in addition to 250 cc contests. For the '89 season, Kocinski raced a Yamaha YZR500 for Kenny Roberts' team. He finished in 35th place. The following year, Kocinski switched back to racing 250 cc bikes exclusively. The switch paid off; he placed first, scoring 223 points.
